Jaw aesthetic is applied to provide a younger appearance, a proportional appearance on the face and correction of congenital problems in the chin structure.

The chin, like the nose, is one of the important structures in the midline of the face that creates symmetry and harmony of the face. Since it is in the midline, it has an important place in making the structures of the face look harmonious with each other. A small chin can make your face look bigger or longer, and vice versa.

A crooked chin can cause the entire face to look crooked. An ideal size-to-ratio ratio for the chin in men and women has been described. The presence of a slightly more prominent chin in men contributes to the masculine appearance, so it is demanded.

How do I notice the problem with my chin?

If your upper teeth or gums are very visible when you smile, your upper jaw is too long, your upper and lower teeth do not close in line when you close your mouth, there may be jaw defects if there is a distance between them. If the most anterior point of your lower jaw is far behind or ahead of your lips when viewed from the side, you may have a problem with your lower jaw.

This is an issue that often cannot be easily noticed by patients or their relatives and requires professional experience. Many of my patients who had cosmetic jaw surgery were unaware that they had such a problem until our pre-operative interview. The photographs we took during our pre-operative meeting and the analyzes we made on them help us a lot.

Who gets jaw surgery?

In the past, jaw surgeries were only performed on patients who had very obvious problems in their upper or lower jaws and therefore had problems with biting and chewing.

Today, due to a better understanding of facial harmony (the importance of the harmony of the parts of the face in facial beauty) and the task of the chin here, aesthetic chin surgeries can be performed on patients who do not have any biting or chewing problems.

How is chin aesthetics done?

Jaw surgery is performed under general anesthesia. The duration of chin aesthetics varies between 1.5 hours and 3 hours, depending on whether the operation to be performed is single or double chin.

The chin implant, which is sized according to the patient’s needs, is inserted through a small incision made under the chin or inside the mouth and placed on the part prepared in the appropriate place and plan on the jawbone.

What are the Negative Effects of a Small Jaw on My Face?

The noses of patients with a smaller chin compared to their face are perceived as larger than they actually are. No matter how small the noses of these patients are surgically reduced, they can still be perceived as large.

In some cases, aging and sagging in the neck area can develop faster than their peers, since the person’s chin is smaller than it should be.

In patients who have biting problems due to their crooked jaw structure, many oral and general health problems such as sleeping with their mouth open at night, dry mouth, bad breath, and gum diseases may occur.

Aesthetic chin surgery aims to eliminate all of the problems summarized above, whether it is performed for functional concerns such as incorrect bite or just for aesthetic reasons.

How Many Types of Aesthetic Chin Surgery Are There?

Aesthetic jaw surgeries are divided into two types according to whether the patient has biting and chewing problems.

  1. Orthodontic treatment (braces treatment)
  2. Orthognathic surgery (the process of shifting the jaw bones)

In patients who are referred to orthodontic treatment (braces treatment) by dentists but have severe biting and chewing problems, no response can be obtained with orthodontic treatment alone. These patients need to be treated with orthognathic surgery (the process of shifting the jaw bones). These surgeries are more comprehensive, have a longer recovery period, require working as a team with dentists and orthodontists, but have very satisfactory results compared to jaw surgeries performed only for aesthetic reasons.

Patients who have no problems with biting or chewing can be operated for aesthetic purposes because their jaws negatively affect the facial harmony. These surgeries, on the other hand, are relatively simple and have shorter recovery periods. The duration of the operation takes approximately 15-20 minutes and there are no problems with eating in the postoperative period.

Is There Any Traces After Jaw Aesthetics?

During the surgery, an incision can be made inside the mouth or under the chin. Both techniques have advantages and disadvantages. The most important advantage of the intraoral incision is that there is no scar after the operation, the disadvantage is that it can sometimes cause some numbness in the lower lips. The advantages of the incision made from the wrinkle under the chin is that it does not cause loss of sensation on the lips, but some traces may remain at the incision site, depending on personal characteristics.

If my patient’s oral hygiene is good, I prefer intraoral incisions.

How is the Recovery Period After Jaw Surgery?

Swelling, slight tension and pain may occur around the jaw for about a week after chin surgery. There may be temporary mild numbness on the lower lips. During and after this first week, there is no difficulty in biting or eating, but a good oral cleaning after meals is very important. The incisions made in the mouth heal after the first week and the swelling around the chin almost completely disappears within the first week.

Jaw surgery prices vary according to the intervention to be performed. It is healthier for the patient to be examined in terms of getting a jaw aesthetic price.

Jaw Filing Surgery

The surgery performed to eliminate the deformities of the bone in the jaw area is called jaw rasping. This surgery is known as the most used technique among all jaw aesthetic surgeries. Deformities that disrupt the general facial aesthetics of people appear in various forms. Generally speaking, chin rasp operations are the most effective method for removing the excess anteriorly and laterally.
